Melty, wet, muddy, rainy. New life and more sunlight. Awakening. These are some ideas that come up when thinking of Spring and it’s what we are experiencing in our everyday at this time.
After the cold and rigidity of Winter, longer days melt the snow. Things that were lodged and frozen get moving and streams flow and wind blows. The same thing is happening internally. We may notice more mucous or a feeling of lethargy or build up in our systems, or a nice desire to move our bodies and enjoy sunshine and fresh air. Nature is helping and encouraging us to melt and move our own stagnation, in our minds and bodies, and environments as well.
Helpful ideas during this time:

• LIMIT DAIRY. If you could choose to only practice one health behavior around this time of the Spring Equinox, limit or completely refrain from dairy, especially at night before bed. Dairy greatly increases kapha, which means increased mucous and congestion. Why does it even matter? Excess or imbalance of any quality or dosha can lead to dis-ease. Changes of season are times when excess of the qualities of the season we have been in and are now moving out of have likely built up and need to be balanced. The final parts of winter are also associated with kapha.
• More aerobic activity. Get your blood pumping and flowing through your body. Think running, dancing, moving your body with intuitive or flowy movement. Anything that gets you excited and motivated to move. *Pro tip: start with movement that you actually enjoy and feels good in your body. Don’t torture yourself by forcing movement that doesn’t feel good or you don’t enjoy. On the other hand if you’re feeling the need for a challenge to help with some get up and go, go!
• Sweat. Go to a dry sauna or again, more aerobic activity, or even static holds until you sweat.
• Dry brush or scrub your body with an herbal salt scrub, or any salt scrub! This helps the lymphatic system detox and flow. If you are one who still feels dry at this time, oil up with abhyanga massage which also helps the lymphatic system. If you already feel oily, stick to dry brushing.
• Eat more greens. Drink dandelion tea, nettle tea, and ginger tea. Consider cooking your greens, and having them in tea where applicable, or adding warm spices like ginger to help you digest the greens more easily.
• Clean up your environment. Organise your space, wipe down or vacuum up the dust and stagnation. Break down those frozen snow piles that have built up around your home, this is also a good work out to get your system moving!
• Ayurvedic cleansing. You still get to eat food and detox and balance your body at the same time 🙂 Here is a link to a guided ayurvedic cleanse and community if you are interested. It is live March 31st to April 6, 2025. Pranaful cleanse by Meredith Klein.

More on the energetics. Spring is Kapha time in Ayurveda.
Kapha can be tamasic, which means dull and unmoving. The benefit of tamasic energy is that it creates stability and form. Too much stability can lead to stagnation and lack of movement. As springtime aligns with a equinox, what a beautiful time to find balance.
Some of the gunas, or qualities of kapha are oily, slimy/smooth, wet, cold, heavy, dense, static, soft, slow, sticky/cloudy.
Notice how this shows up for you in your body, mood, and environment. Are you feeling the buildup, wanting to be a homebody and not move? Are you feeling the pull to move and get going, create more balance and move the stagnation? If you do feel dull, that’s normal as the peak of kapha season embraces us (whether in a welcome hug or a smothering hug is open to your interpretation).
As the sun shines longer each day it is an encouragement from great Mama Nature to stoke your inner fire and get moving so you can healthily enjoy a whole new season of life and adventure. Wetness, form, and stability are grounds on which seeds can be planted, nourished, nurtured, warmed and grown into new life with the balance of sunshine, warmth, and interacting with life to pollinate your blooms.
