Ayurveda PSA: Don’t Heat Your Honey

Warm water and drinks are ok for honey to be added to. There isn’t one consensus of exactly how hot is too hot for honey. In general, definitely do not bake or cook with honey and wait until drinks are a comfortable drinking temperature before adding honey.

Extra hot beverage enjoyers, maybe stick with maple syrup 😉

Heating honey alters its composition and raises levels of a substance in the honey called HMF. The altered composition of heated honey becomes undigestable and rather than healing, creates harmful buildup called ama. Hear Dr. John Douillard speak about heated honey according to ancient and modern science in this video.

Enjoying honey raw and drizzled over cooled food and baked goods instead of cooked and baked in is a sweet idea. Keep in mind that honey has been used as medicine, not only a sweetener, and is beneficial in moderation.

A few more sweet notes on honey:
• Raw honey is great to use during spring to clear excess mucous.
• Raw honey is healing internally and externally.
• If you’re feeling extra heated in the body, be mindful that pure honey is warming.
• Honey has been called the nectar of the gods, for good reason of its beneficial and nourishing effects like helping bolster immunity and allergy resistance, being antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory.
• Honey also helps with detox and improving digestion.
• Honey can be added to herbs to improve and balance their overall effect.

Be sure to use raw and unfiltered honey.

Ayurveda and many cultures and traditions see honey as medicinal. The medicine can become detrimental when taken incorrectly.
