Peaceful Autumn greetings to you and welcome to Autumn!
The autumn equinox marks the beginning of fall on the calendar, but the seasonal change can be felt beginning and peaking at a little different timing depending on where you are and depending on the year.
Autumn in Ayurveda is Vata energy. Vata is the energy of air and ether or space.
Vata equals movement and change. Individually this can show up as inspiration, creativity, and spontaneity. This can also present as feeling anxious, scattered, ungrounded, nervous and indecisive. Vata personality can be artistic, quirky, spiritual as well as easily overwhelmed and forgetful.
Vata in nature is wind, cold, stars, dry air, outer space, the space around us, and the changing leaves.
In the body Vata can show up as flexibility, dry skin and hair, irregular appetite, forgetting to eat, airy gas, popping and cracking, sensitivity to cold, and easily fluctuating weight or a challenge in putting on weight.
Vata energy is often highly creative and easily inspired but can feel anxious about following through or be quick to understand and inspire and equally quick to forget. All of the wellness inspiration here can help balance the qualities of Vata so you can enjoy vitality and inspiration all year long!
What Vata qualities have you noticed in your life lately?

Here are your Autumn seasonal wellness tips:
- Stay warm + hydrated with WARM liquids. Cold, iced, or fizzy drinks are not helpful during seasonal change and in excess can lead to imbalance that leads to sickness.
- Connect with nature & enjoy the fall colors! The crisp autumn air can be invigorating and refreshing. Even though it may be cold, fresh air is still important
- Keep a clove in your mouth for internal warmth + antiviral activity. This can be especially helpful during holiday travel to keep the unwanted bugs at bay.
- Take triphala to help maintain or restore balance. Can be taken daily or before bed. Take before or after meals to help digestion. If you find yourself feeling more dry after taking triphala, limit use or lessen the dose. Triphala is not meant to be like a pill for numbing effects of challenging lifestyle and food habits but it does help balance the effects of overeating and modern lifestyle challenges. Triphala can help balance the effects of overindulgence during holiday meals. Did you overindulge? Try taking triphala before bedtime to help balance 🙂 Follow the recommended dose on your triphala package.
- Keep your ears protected from wind. Ears are one channel that wind can enter your body through. Excess wind in the body can lead to all sorts of imbalance, sickness, and disease. Keep your internal wind balanced by keeping your ears warm and protected from the harshness of cold and wind.
- Oil up! One of the best remedies for Fall. Put oil on your feet + behind your ears, and on your entire body! Organic, unrefined oil is best. Try sesame, castor. or almond oil. Sesame oil is ultra nourishing and soothing for the anxious and dry energy of Vata. Some people don’t love the smell of sesame oil but I think it is worth the medicinal benefits and some even enjoy the scent of sesame oil. You can also add soothing essential oils like rose, cedar, sandal wood, or ylang ylang. Or any essential oil that makes you feel good!
- Enjoy ashwagandha tea to help ground, nourish, soothe your nervous system. Add ginger + chamomile for extra digestion + immune support. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen which means it helps your body adapt to current needs. Ashwagandha can give you more energy as well as help you have more restful sleep. However, if you feel extra stubborn or heated, Ashwagandha can increase this in some cases. Generally though Ashwagandha is wonderful and beautiful medicine for excessive dryness and anxious energy. Chamomile helps boost immunity and clear excess wind while ginger provides warmth and helps deliver, digest and process the beneficial effects of herbs.
- Vata time of day when air and ether energy is strongest is 2 to 6 am + pm. Do you find yourself waking up between 2 and 6 a.m. or having restless sleep? This could be due to high Vata energy. Do you find yourself suddenly needing to follow a creative spark or having extra inspiration, in the wee hours or anytime? This can also be an effect of Vata.
